The $2.50 Indian Head, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, was minted irregularly from 1908 through 1929. It is the first U.S. coin with an "incused" or sunken design. The release of this coin came at a time when other coins of this denomination were not commonly used in everyday transactions.
The circulation of this coin was more frequent in large international transactions and infrequent bank disbursements.
