The Liberty head, 20 dollar gold coin is the first of the Double Eagles ever minted in the United States. After the Gold Rush in California (1848) the increasing amounts of gold to the World 's supply minting a new coin in a larger denomination just made sense to the public. Congress authorized the first $20 Double eagle on March 3, 1849. During the 58 years of mintage the San Francisco mint registered the greatest amount of coinage.

Among other variations, the most visible changes were the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added in 1866 and in 1877 TWENTY D. was changed to TWENTY DOLLARS both of these modifications were seen on the reverse (back) of the $20 Liberty gold coins.
