$4 Dollar Stella Gold Coins

Certified Gold Coin

$4_Stella_Gold_Coin_Obverse$4.00 Stella Gold Coins were conceived by Honorable John A. Kasson, who at the time was serving as the United States minister of Austria. This gold rarity remains the only $4 U.S. gold coin ever produced and never released for circulation.

The idea behind the creation of an American coin for international trade had surfaced several times earlier. After convening in Paris in 1867, 12 European countries decided to mint national coins of the same size (21mm) and gold content (0.1867 Troy oz.) to facilitate trade. Among the gold coins that followed the specifications of this accord are the Swiss 20 Franc, French 20 Franc, and Italian 20 Lire.

The $5 Liberty gold coin was too heavy, the $3 Indian Princess gold coin too light, creating the need for a new coin in between. Thus, the $4 Stella gold coin was born.
