$5.00 Indian Gold Coins
Certified Gold Coin
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and minted from 1908-1929, the obverse of the $5 Indian coin pictures the first American Indian Chief to ever appear on a United States coin. The famous Boston Sculptor was enlisted by President Roosevelt On September 26, 1908 to prepare the models for this coin. Among the most desired regular issue varieties of the series are the 1909-O, 1922-D and the 1929, this last being the rarest of the Indian head half eagle in terms of the total number of surviving examples.
A total of 662,000 1929 issues were made after 1916 but nearly all pieces were withheld from circulation and were melted in the 1930's. The US Indian Head Gold Coin is referred to an Ancient Indian Gold Coin.
