The half eagles or $5 coin series were minted from 1795 to 1929 at 7 different branches of the United States Mint. The designers of these coins were Robert Scot (1795-1807 Capped Bust to Right), John Reich (1807-1834, Capped Bust & Capped head to Left), William Kneass (1834-1838, Classic Head), Christian Gobrecht (1839-1908 Coronet Head or Liberty Head -shown above) and Bela Lyon Pratt (1908-1929 Indian Head).
From 1795-1834 each coin contains 8.75 gram of gold (.25789 oz. gold) and a .9167 pure gold. The coins minted from 1837-1929 contain 8.36 grams of gold (.24169 and .24187 oz. gold) and .8992 (1837-1838 strikes) .900 (1839-1929) pure gold. There are a total of 10 different designs for the half eagles.
