The British Sovereign Coin was first issued in 1816. Minted originally in London, Sovereigns were struck worldwide at the height of the British Empire. The obverse design features the reigning monarch (sovereign, hence the name) and the reverse design features Pestruccis St. George slaying the Dragon on the other. The metal content of each denomination consists of .917 pure (22k) and contains .2354 troy ounce of pure gold.
