Indian Gold Dollar Type 1
Certified Gold Coin
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of this coin features a small head with a coronet, facing to the left with the word LIBERTY inscribed on it. The Type 1 Liberty gold piece is the smallest of the U.S. gold coins at only 13 millimeters in diameter. Another significant variation is the missing initial of the designer on the neck truncation.
There are thirteen stars surrounding Liberty, while the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the wreath near the border of the coin. Mint files record the issuance of 1000 business strikes of the Type 1 and only 6 Proofs, although others may have been made.
