$3 Dollar Indian Princess Gold Coin
Certified Gold Coin
The only $3 gold piece minted in the United States is commonly referred to as the Indian Princess because of the front of the coin. The challenge to create a unique coin that could not easily be confused with the $2.5 or $5 Coronet issues (both of which portray Liberty wearing a coronet) fell to James B. Longacre. The two versions of the $3 gold pieces, Type 2 (Small Head) and Type 3 (Large Head) were struck from 1854-1889.
Limited quantities were minted due to low popularity, which contributes to their high attractiveness amongst investors and collectors today.
